On the 27. May 2024 the European Council approved the new EU Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR). The aim is to make future products on the EU internal market more durable, repairable, energy efficient and recyclable. In addition, the destruction of usable consumer articles is prohibited. The law supersedes the existing Ecodesign Directive and no longer affects only energy-related products such as washing machines or dishwashers, but almost all everyday products. Through lower power consumption as well as the longevity and repairability of the products, consumers are to save costs and reduce environmental impact in the future.
Added value of norms and standards in the circular economy
The new Ecodesign Regulation offers great potential for the circular economy. It envisages using and using raw materials, materials and products as efficiently as possible in order to create a sustainable, low-carbon and resource-saving economy. Standards and norms play a decisive role in this. They help to standardise terminology and interfaces as well as define quality criteria or test requirements. For example, the 2021 published DIN EN 4555x series of standards covers essential aspects of material efficiency throughout the life cycle of a product and describes basic methods for evaluating product properties.
The EU Commission has already commissioned the development of standards, so-called "standards". Mandates CEN/CENELEC for ecodesign requirements of certain product groups, including requirements for refrigerators and household tumble dryers, as well as for plastics recycling and recycled plastics in support of the European strategy for plastics in a circular economy. Several other mandates have already been announced in the Commission's Annual Union Work Programme for European standardisation. More information on current and announced mandates can be found in the download area.
